Pension accounting is a specialist area, but it pays to be aware of the general approach required for the correct recognition and measurement of pension plans.

This short course takes a look at the basics of accounting for the two main types of pension scheme - defined contribution and defined benefit pension plans - from the perspective of the employer; reflecting the provisions in UK and Ireland GAAP for 2025/26.

It also covers pension scheme accounting from the perspective of the pension fund. This is guided by the framework within the Pensions Statement of Recommended Practice (SORP), issued by the Pensions Research Accountants Group (PRAG).
